Chiharu Shiota, Under the Skin

“This monograph captures the unmistakable presence and power of her work – you’ll find yourself tangled in her infinite webs.”
Charlotte Jansen in Wallpaper*, 24 July 2017

Under the Skin was published by Kunsthalle Rostock, DE and Hatje Cantz on the occasion of the artist’s first retrospective at Kunsthalle Rostock. This monograph offers a comprehensive overview through a collection of photographs, film stills, drawings, prints, and objects from Chiharu Shiota’s archive. It spans the last 20 years of her career, from her early performances such as Becoming Painting (1994) to her recent installations: Uncertain Journey at Blain|Southern Berlin (2016), Where are we going?, Le Bon Marché, Paris (2017) and Letters of Thanks, Kunsthalle Rostock (2017). This landmark publication contains 300 illustrations spread over 240 pages, along with texts by art historian and curator Tereza de Arruda, art historian Pascal Hess and psychologist Olaf Reis.
